WHAT WE BELIEVE
What we believe affects everything we do. That is why CityLight Baptist Church bases our beliefs entirely on God's Word. We know that we can trust the Bible as our source of truth and as the solid foundation on which to build our lives.
If you have any questions about our beliefs or your own, we would love for you to contact us below! We would be happy to discuss it with you and show you answers directly from the Bible.
We believe in the verbal inspiration and inerrancy of the Scriptures and the authority of both the Old and New Testament.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 • 2 Peter 1:19-21
We believe that God eternally exists in three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and that these three are one God, having the same nature, attributes, and perfections, and are worthy of the same worship, reverence, and obedience.
Deuteronomy 6:4 • Matthew 28:19 • 1 Corinthians 8:6
We believe man was created in the image of God, but man sinned and fell through disobedience to God, and that the entire human race shares in man's lost and depraved nature.
Genesis 2:16 • Genesis 3:16–19 • Romans 3:10–23 • Romans 6:23
We believe Jesus, the eternal Son of God, took upon Himself the form of a man by means of the virgin birth, lived a sinless life, yet retained His absolute deity, being at the same time fully God and fully man.
We believe that atonement for sin was made by the sacrificial and substitutionary death of Jesus Christ.
We believe in the literal resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into heaven, and His priestly intercession.
Luke 1:30–55 • John 1:1–15 • Philippians 2:5–8 • Luke 24 • Acts 1:9–11 • Romans 5:8–10 • 1 Peter 3:18
We believe salvation is the gift of God by grace alone and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
We believe in the eternal salvation of the believers and in the eternal damnation and punishment of the nonbelievers. We believe that the consummation of all things includes the visible, personal, and glorious return of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 24:29–42 • 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18
We believe the church is local assembly of baptized believers who have joined together to carry out the Great Commission.
We believe that the ordinances of the church, by the command of Christ, are water baptism by immersion and the Lord’s Supper, both of which are administered to those who are born again.
Mark 16:15 • 1 Corinthians 12:12 • Ephesians 1:22–23

OUR STORY & PASTOR
KENNY VAN HOVEN
Kenny and his wife, Heather, served faithfully at Temple Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia– where he taught young adults and directed the children’s ministry. Over time, God led Kenny into pastoral ministry. In early 2014, God confirmed in their hearts that it was His will for them to plant a church in the beautiful community of Culpeper!
Temple Baptist Church, their church home of over ten years, supported Kenny and Heather and the start of CityLight in every way– financially, in prayer, and with hands-on help. CityLight Baptist Church held its first official service on October 5, 2014! God truly blessed by providing a building and friends who have joined this endeavor from the very beginning.
Kenny completed his Master of Ministry degree through Virginia Baptist College. He assumed leadership of the Nicaraguan Baptist Bible Institute in Managua and assists national pastors in planting churches.
Pastor Kenny and his family have a huge heart for the community of Culpeper! They are actively involved in outreach and in training the next generation. God has given them a love for missions, too– as they minister to Hispanic people, both in Culpeper and in Spanish-speaking countries.
It's exciting to reflect on everything that God has done; and we look forward to what He will continue to do in and through CityLight Baptist Church! Come and be a part of the story
with us!

WHAT TO EXPECT
Come and experience meaningful messages from God’s Word, uplifting music, and encouraging friendships. We hope you’ll feel blessed and spiritually equipped for life after studying the Bible together. Whether you are already a Christian, or you are just interested in learning more about who God is and His purpose for your life, we hope you’ll feel right at home fellowshipping, growing, and worshipping with us at CityLight Baptist Church!
That’s probably why we make such a close family, because we’re all sort of limping through life and growing in grace. We’re not evaluating you—when you walk in, we’re glad to see you! Don’t worry about having to measure up or fit in. None of us really measure up, and we’re all very different. Our family is very diverse, so fitting in isn’t an issue.
Honestly, religion has let a lot of people down. Religious structures and systems are confusing, complicated, and disconnected from real life. We would love to help you move from “religion” into an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ. If you feel new to it all, that’s ok, our church is filled with new believers—we speak “beginner” fluently!
We worship Jesus, study the Bible, and encourage each other in simple terms you’ll be able to connect to your daily life. We believe and teach what the Bible actually says and why it matters—no pointless traditions, no archaic languages, no droning or irrelevant lectures, no pious arrogance. We open the Bible and apply it to real life in the twenty-first century.
Most of our church family is new! We really are just regular, friendly people. “Religious” people often come off contrived, artificial, and argumentative. You won’t find that at Emmanuel. We’re like you—working hard, fighting for healthy relationships, looking for encouragement, and glad to have some good friends who also have faith in Jesus Christ.
